Aikido Lessons for Beginners in El Paso and the Southwest

Aikido of El Paso has been providing aikido lessons to the Southwest area for over twenty years. Throughout our time, we’ve seen a fair share of beginners come through our doors. These individuals come to our dojo from many walks of life but they all gain one very important thing: the mastery of the self. As a martial art, aikido distinguishes itself due to its non-resistance principles. If you’re interested in experiencing the benefits aikido has to offer, visit Aikido of El Paso. The art’s nature itself allows students of all ages to practice together. This means students can range from the age of 15 to 70. In fact, aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba practiced the budo well into his 70s and 80s. So, no matter your age, aikido will be a welcome addition to your life. Aikido of El Paso is your guide on the path towards enlightenment.

How Aikido Differs from Other Martial Arts

Many martial arts enforce the idea of competition in order to advance the skills of the student. Morihei Ueshiba believed competition to be incompatible with the principles of aikido. For this reason, a majority of aikido schools do not have competitions or tournaments. The reasoning behind this is due to the fact that competitions, in essence, lead to a winner and a loser. Competitions encourage a desire to win, to defeat, to dominate another human being. These ideals directly oppose the underlying principles of aikido. There is a mutual relationship and understanding between partners. This is necessary in order to minimize the chance of injury.

Why Beginners Should Choose Aikido

Aikido is a very effective form of self-defense. It teaches a relaxed awareness that emphasizes blending with an attack, rather than blocking and stopping it. People of all ages can benefit greatly from learning the self-defensive skills of aikido. Not only does this martial art provide a safe, non-combative way to defend oneself, it also leads to weight loss. Aikido has been shown to improve balance and flexibility so it is a popular choice for older individuals. Interested individuals are welcome to participate in our introductory courses. These courses provide a brief aikido experience. Since this art requires patience and commitment, it may not be suitable for some. But, if you’re ready to learn the ways of aikido to benefit your life, both mentally and physically, we welcome you.
